Background

Jordan and Spain this week launched the “Reayah 2” project under a €5.5 million grant aimed at strengthening primary healthcare services and supporting Jordan’s efforts to further develop its healthcare system. Minister of Health Dr Ibrahim Al-Badour and Spanish Ambassador to Jordan Jose Luis Pardo Cuerdo signed a letter of intent to mark the launch, reflecting the longstanding partnership between the two countries in the health sector.

The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Health and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) to enhance the quality and accessibility of healthcare services for all people, including refugees and the local communities.

“The project embodies the ongoing cooperation of the ministry with the AECID in the context of developing the primary healthcare system in Jordan,” Al-Badour stated. “He stressed that the ministry continues working on implementing its strategic vision for developing the health sector in accordance with the Economic Modernization Vision, and this is done through improving the quality of healthcare and providing access to healthcare services sustainably.”

Primary healthcare is described by Al-Badour as the foundation of the national health system, as it plays an important role in preventing diseases, early diagnosis and treatment of non-communicable diseases. According to him, the project will improve primary healthcare services in Zarqa Governorate through institutional capacity building, improvement of professionals’ skills, and service quality.

The ambassador reiterated the Spanish government’s commitment to supporting Jordan in the field of the public healthcare system. He said reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases through prevention and early detection remains a strategic priority of the two countries’ cooperation.

“Reayah 2” builds on the success of the first phase, which was funded by the European Union and rolled out through AECID.
