Background
A hospital that had been quietly running out of room since the 1980s finally got the upgrade it needed. Andalucian President Juanma Moreno officially opened the expanded Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquia in Velez-Malaga this week, marking the completion of a €4 million upgrade funded by the regional government. The move intends to overcome long-standing capacity challenges and transform the care delivery in the key departments.
Two new buildings were constructed to house non-clinical services such as the auditorium, cafeteria, chapel, and training rooms. That made free space inside the main hospital to expand the day unit, radiology, digestive medicine, and to create a brand-new continuity of care unit for patients with chronic conditions.
The results show that the numbers that matter the most. The surgical waiting times have been reduced from 91 days to 66 days, which creates significant benefits for the area that experiences high patient volumes during the summer tourist period.
The project supports a regional initiative, which aims to improve healthcare services throughout Málaga province by establishing better healthcare facilities and providing continuous public funding for improved service delivery.
Experts say hospitals are choosing to upgrade their existing facilities instead of building new ones, as it helps save money while also improving services.
As demand increases, the Axarquía upgrade shows that small, step-by-step investments can improve care quality, expand capacity, and enhance the patient experience.
