Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo has entered a collaboration with Anthropic to accelerate the development of new medicines and AI-driven software, saying AI tools offer entirely new scientific opportunities.
The partnership was announced as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the benefits of AI in health care, and amid broader industry discussion around long-term AI safety, including one estimate placing a 10% probability on major risks from advanced AI within the next decade.
Anthropic also underscored the importance of strong safeguards after reports surfaced that some users had attempted to misuse Claude for bioweapons research, reinforcing why oversight remains central to its work with partners such as Novo.
Novo said it would use Anthropic’s models and Claude Science to advance its research as it works toward becoming the world’s most AI-driven healthcare company.
Mike Doustdar, CEO of Novo, formerly Novo Nordisk, said joining forces with Anthropic would strengthen its R&D organisation and support its mission to bring transformative health solutions to people with chronic diseases, adding that AI tools can open new scientific opportunities and deepen understanding of human biology and drug mechanics.

Von der Leyen used her State of the EU speech to say Europe should embrace AI in health care, citing early breast cancer detection through AI-supported mammography as a potential game-changer, while emphasising that the technology should empower doctors rather than replace them.
