Veterans Memorial Medical Centre (VMMC), a hospital under the Department of National Defence, has announced a new partnership with Team Sweden to strengthen its cancer care services and support the digital transformation of its healthcare system.
Team Sweden is a network of Swedish public sector organisations, agencies and companies working to promote the country’s international business ties. The collaboration was announced during a visit to Manila by Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson this week, and was endorsed by Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.
The initiative forms part of the wider Sweden-Philippines Strategic Partnership in Cancer Care, aimed at combining Swedish innovation with Philippine healthcare expertise to develop solutions for patients nationwide. Drawing on Sweden’s experience in digital healthcare, the partnership will explore ways to help VMMC become a more digitally advanced public hospital, improving patient experience, clinical decision-making and operational efficiency.
The collaboration will also look into methods for earlier detection of lung cancer, including the use of artificial intelligence to assist in analysing imaging already collected during routine care, without requiring additional scans or equipment.
During his visit, Minister Jonson toured VMMC’s facilities alongside senior defence officials. He said that strong societies support their citizens and those who have served, while using innovation to address future challenges.
Swedish Ambassador to Manila Anna Ferry said the partnership would help bring new approaches to cancer detection and hospital digitalisation to VMMC, supporting better outcomes for veterans.
VMMC officials noted that lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the Philippines, often diagnosed late, and stressed that earlier detection allows for gentler treatment and better chances of recovery.
