Background-
Cyprus will present a new healthcare proposal during the Informal Meeting of EU Health Ministers in Nicosia on 26 February 2026.
Being a member of the Council of the European Union, Cyprus will suggest establishing a European Centre of Clinical Excellence for pharmaceuticals.
The goal is to strengthen transparency in the management of medicines, support informed decision-making, and enhance collaboration between European health systems. A policy paper has been prepared to guide discussions among ministers.
The two-day meeting, held on 25 and 26 February, brings together health ministers from EU countries and members of the European Free Trade Association.
Senior health officials will also attend, including EU Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Olivér Várhelyi and representatives from the European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organization.
Talks will focus on improving access to medicines, medical technologies, and quality care across Europe, especially during crises. Leading Ministers will also discuss the EU’s role in supporting mental health, particularly for the young generation.
The rising youth mental health challenges, social inclusion, and prevention-based policies will also be discussed and taken into consideration.
The meeting will be concluded with discussions on the European Health Data Space, which aims to make better connections for health systems across Europe while considering responsible use of data and artificial intelligence. Ministers will also attend cultural events in Nicosia.
